Hi lovelies! It’s been a while 😬 I’m really not very good at this whole blogging thing anymore. But I’m going to keep trying, because that’s just the kind of person I am 🤭
Anyway, today I’m going to be sharing my August TBR! Yes, I know it’s over a week into the month, but at least it’s here now 😂 This month I’m participating in the N.E.W.Ts Magical Readathon hosted by G over at Book Roast, and while I do tend to be very much a mood reader, I thought I would give it a shot! I completed all 12 O.W.Ls in my own time earlier this year, but this is the first time I’ll ever be participating officially in a readathon and I am PUMPED 😂
So if you don’t know what the N.E.W.Ts Magical Readathon is, in a nutshell it’s a month-long challenge held in August with a bunch of fun prompts and career paths to choose from. It’s one of the most in-depth readathons out there, and so many people in the community get involved. Check out the official announcement video if you’re curious for more information!
But enough of that, this is going to be a long one, so let’s get on with it!
It took me a LONG time to decide which career I wanted to pursue, and I actually chose by looking at the prompts first. I knew I was going to be on a book buying ban in August, so I needed to choose a path on which I could fulfil all the prompts with my current TBR.
Eventually I decided I wanted to be a Curse Breaker! The N.E.W.Ts I need are:
- O in Ancient Runes
- O in Arithmancy
- E in Defense Against The Dark Arts
- A in Charms
Okay, so I need to read a total of 9 books. Pretty doable for me, especially if I carry on the way I have been for the last few months 🤭 In fact, at the time of writing this post, I’ve already completed three challenges 😁
Here’s a breakdown of the N.E.W.Ts I’ll be taking and what books I’ve chosen for each prompt!
A: READ A BOOK RECOMMENDED BY A FRIEND | ME BEFORE YOU
I decided before starting the N.E.W.Ts that I was going to try and branch out as much as possible with the genres I’m reading. Since adult romance is something I never think to try – and my best friend recommended I give this author a shot – I thought why the heck not 🤭
E: READ A BOOK WRITTEN IN THE PAST TENSE | HARRY POTTER
For months, I’ve wanted to re-read the entire Harry Potter series, and what better time to start than during a Harry Potter themed readathon? It’s been years since I last read this series, and I can’t wait to dive back into this amazing, magical world with the beautiful illustrated edition 😍
O: READ A BOOK THAT’S BEEN ON YOUR TBR FOR AGES | THE WINNER’S CURSE
I genuinely can’t even remember when I bought this book, to be honest, but I know it was at least four years ago. For some reason, I still haven’t read it, and I don’t know why. I remember this series being quite hyped back when it was released, but I don’t see people talk about it anymore. I just really hope I love it after all this time 😬
A: READ A BOOK THAT ENDS ON AN EVEN PAGE NUMBER | CARAVAL
This trilogy is one of the most hyped series’ out there right now, with the last book having been released earlier this year. Even though this particular book gets a lot of mixed reviews, I’ve been excited to read it for a long time. This was actually the first challenge I completed, and I really enjoyed the experience of Caraval.
E: READ A STANDALONE | DAUGHTER OF THE BURNING CITY
I don’t actually know a whole lot about this book, and I didn’t realise this was Amanda Foody’s debut novel. I haven’t read Ace Of Shades (though I do own it), so I figured why not read this one first? If I had to guess, I would presume this is a sort of mash up of Caraval and The Night Circus, but I’ve been wrong about these things before 😂
O: READ A BOOK THAT IS MORE THAN 350 PAGES LONG | THE CAGED QUEEN
I read The Last Namsara in July, and I actually loved it a whole lot more than I thought I would. As soon as I finished it, I knew I’d be reading the sequel soon, so I immediately ordered a copy. I know it’s a companion novel, rather than a direct sequel, but I’m still super excited to dive back into this world!
DEFENsE AGAINST The dark arts
A: READ A BOOK THAT IS BLACK UNDER THE DUST JACKET | A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC
When I read Vicious in July, I knew that it was going to make it onto my best books of the year list. That was my first V.E. Schwab book, and I’m so glad I finally understand the hype 😍 I’ve actually already completed this challenge, and while I didn’t love A Darker Shade Of Magic quite as much as Vicious, it was still a 5 star read for me!
E: READ A BOOK FROM YOUR CURRENT TBR | THE CERULEAN
This is yet another book that I purchased without really knowing anything about it. This was partially a cover buy, but I also remember seeing a couple of BookTuber’s talk about it around the time of its release. It’s not a particularly hyped book, but I’m curious about it nonetheless!
A: READ A BOOK WITH A GORGEOUS COVER | DAISY JONES & THE SIX
I quite often get intimidated by hype, and I think this is one of the most talked about books of this year so far. Everybody loves Taylor Jenkins Reid, but I was terrified about the interview format of this story. I really needn’t have worried. I’ve actually completed this challenge, and I just want to say that this book is fucking incredible. A thousand percent would recommend 😍
And there you have it! Phew, this was a long post. If you made it this far, have a cookie 🤭 I’m so glad that I decided to participate in this readathon, and I’m so excited for the rest of the month! I hope you all have a great August and read some fantastic books! Let me know if you’re taking the N.E.W.Ts, and if so, what career path did you choose?
Until next time!
